I had a realization this week that honestly shocked me a little.
After 15+ years as a documentary filmmaker — after building a career on beautiful, cinematic visuals — I found myself saying something I never thought I’d say:
a brand video filmed on your phone may now build more trust than one that looks like a movie.
Not because quality doesn’t matter.
But because we’ve entered a moment where “too polished” can start to feel suspicious.
I found myself doing it without even thinking: scrolling past beautiful video and immediately checking whether it was AI. Looking for the label. Looking for the tell. Looking for proof that a real human actually made it.
And that’s when it hit me:
The more AI-generated video fills our feeds, the more valuable real, hand-made, visibly human footage becomes.
